John Bennett, of Decatur, Mich., enlisted in Company C, 4th Michigan Cavalry, Aug. 5, 1862. Promoted to First Sergeant, he was taken prisoner July 19, 1864, at Flint Hill Church, Ga. He was freed by Jan. 8, 1865, when he was commissioned Second Lieutenant. He was brevetted First Lieutenant for meritorious service in the capture of Jefferson Davis, and was mustered out July 1, 1865. From the description of John Bennett papers, 1864.
